007 | Know That You Are Not Your Trauma

Repeat after me: Trauma happened to me. I am not my trauma.

As a trauma survivor, you’re likely to blend what happened to you with your identity. You might think“I’m filthy” or “I’m damaged, broken.” I know this because these are words I’ve thought to myself. I have spent the majority of my life blaming myself for my childhood trauma; telling myself that I can’t trust myself or other people. And it wasn’t until I did the work that I realized I didn’t choose what happened to me...the same way you didn’t choose what happened to you. You are not your trauma, and it certainly doesn’t define you. And it’s in this space where we’ll work together towards freedom and love because you’re worth it. You deserve it.

In this episode, I reveal the third rule of the Trauma Hiders Club: you are not your trauma. I share an example to help you reframe your thinking around trauma. I discuss how I’ve lived a vast majority of my life believing that I am damaged and blaming myself for my trauma. I also highlight the hope of finding freedom from trauma and underscore that you are worthy and deserving of love.

“Trauma doesn’t define you; it’s a thing that happened to you.”
