As you consider working with a coach, know that they are not all the same.

I had never worked with a coach before, however, my employer (a very large tech company) offered me the opportunity to work with an executive coach as my leadership responsibilities were increasing.

I didn’t know what to expect, and when I asked others it became clear that everyone had a different experience. Right away I noticed the challenges I faced in leading my team were mostly about me wanting to solve problems.

Karen always embodied curiosity and empathy, and I saw that showing up that same way would be the next level for my leadership.

I learned that listening with curiosity (vs listening to respond) was key, and as I took that on again and again I could see the results of team compassion, connection, and purpose on a bigger scale.

Each week for 3.5 years I “brought my stuff” and Karen reflected what she heard and saw, and challenged me to play with new ways of thinking. I quickly learned that I could only get out of a session what I was willing to put in.

Over time I expanded the support as I continued to work with Karen, we also engaged her in a team coaching program to work with my team!

That work continues today, and it’s a highlight for each and every team member. As you consider working with a coach, know that they are not all the same. If you have the benefit of working with Karen, you’ll have a compassionate, loving, direct, smart, caring partner in support.

You might also have the good fortune of being with a coach that becomes one of your nearest and dearest friends.

Working with Karen has been one of the highlights of my career, I don’t think I would be where I am with the support.

I am honored to know Karen, and I am grateful to have gotten to know myself in her presence.
